May All Beings Be Free From Sickness And Suffering

I finally strung the prayer flags across the back of the enclosed garden. They are a beautiful royal blue and move effortlessly in the breeze. 

I’m curious to see how this small enclosed garden progresses, I don’t have a solid plan for it. I have some ideas but they are a little vague at this point. 

The tomatoes were put in simply to protect them from the dogs and hens, I won’t put them in every year and if I do, there won’t be many, maybe two or three. I planned to put the tomatoes out front where they would get more sun and be safe from the aforementioned beasts but the season got away from me. I mean, how is it April already?

I like that the space is a work in progress and to think it all started because I found a length of picket fence along the side of the road. We took our time constructing the rest of the fence, M. went to great lengths making the new pickets. The only thing we did not do was paint it. Maybe someday, but I’m not sure that it needs to be painted. 

The rest of the garden is coming along nicely as well. I amended the hell out of the soil. It was fried and really needed a boost. So far I’ve made a good home for eggplant, onions, mint, zucchini, lettuce, collards, kale, chard, carrots and leeks. I know I’m forgetting a few other players. Oh, the peppers! Yes, and cucumber and radishes. There’s so much going on out there. It’s a veritable vegetable metropolis. 

Like I said, I have ideas. And I like that the garden is a reflection of all that I imagine.

I Feel Fall Coming

  ALERT! June, July and August have gone missing. The last time I posted here was in May and it was about my microgreens and sadly, shamefully, I did not follow up. In brief, the outcome was just okay. Turns out my dear husband does not care for radishes, not one iota.  But hey, that little experiment was back in May. There are days ahead to play with microgreens again, just not anytime soon. I am in full anticipation of fall. I've started broccoli seeds inside under the grow lights. I have Belstar and a fancy purple broc. They came up in 3 days. Yes, you read that right, 3 days. I'm waiting on the chives and celery to come up. I also started cumin - that's the wild card. Intro To Microgreens

  Let me start by saying I haven’t a clue what I am doing. Michael and I went to a little, and I do mean little, restaurant last week - Nixta Taqueria .  The food was beautiful and good. So, so beautiful and so very good. The tostada was delicately presented, not a way I would have ever thought I’d describe a tostada but nonetheless.  They used microgreens in several of their dishes. Now, I’ve grown bean sprouts in the past, like many decades ago but these were no bean sprouts. These were lacy and purple.  Needless to say, I had my next project.  I wanted to grow them inside as opposed to the backyard because I wanted to make them readily available for Michael. He has a late night salad after work several days a week and I always feel bad when he has to go out to the garden with a flashlight and scissors to snip this or that for his dinner.  The first thing I purchased was a grow light.
